Dean Huffer is a graduate of the Doctor of Physiotherapy program at Bond University, and also holds a Master’s degree in Exercise Science from Adams State University in Colorado, U.S.A. Dean comes from an athletics background, and was an Australian youth champion and Victorian All Schools champion over middle distance events before going onto compete collegiately in the United States. His interest in physiotherapy stemmed from multiple injuries that affected his progress as an athlete and a desire to provide better injury prevention and treatment services in the community.

Dean has been committed to seeking out the best in high performances practices and spent 2012 conducting research at US post-collegiate distance training centres in the lead up to the London Olympics. Recently he has been conducting research into the effectiveness of intrinsic foot musculature strength training for treating plantar fasciitis. Dean is a passionate physiotherapist that treats musculoskeletal conditions affecting children through to elderly populations. His treatment modalities include manual therapy, massage, joint mobilisation, cryotherapy, dry needling, exercise rehabilitation and prescription including strength, core, balance, plyometric and running programs. Meet Michael!

Michael is an Osteopath and Strength and Conditioning Coach here at South Yarra Spine and Sport Medicine. Michael has been an osteopathy for 3 years and over 7 years of experience in the fitness industry. Michael is currently studying a Masters of Applied Sport Science (Strength and conditioning) at Deakin University as well. Michael has a fascination with anatomy and physiology, human movement, and biomechanics and loves to solve problems using a structural approach, in conjunction with his strong rehabilitation skills. Michael strives to keep learning and improving himself with any opportunity that arises. Michael believes in working consistently with patients to help get them from being injured, to improving their baseline performance. Michael is also the head sports trainer for the Essendon Football Club VFLW team, where he works with the medical and high-performance teams, to help manage athletes and various acute sporting injuries. Michael also used to work at North Melbourne Football Club as the Osteopath and Rehab Coordinator for the VFLW team and worked in the AFL men’s team as well.

Luke is an Australian trained physiotherapist with over 15 years of experience within the fitness industry. He started his journey as a swim coach and over the years progressed through personal training, group training and then for the past 7 years, has been working as a physiotherapist.

Through his experience, Luke has recognised his passion for acute musculoskeletal rehab as well post surgical rehabilitation. Luke is also very passionate about the mental health space; the relationship between the body and the mind and how much they can manipulate one another. He plans to potentially do further research in this area. Luke has a holistic approach to rehab. He believes that an appropriate level of manual therapy such as massage and mobilisations to settle the patient’s pain, combined with thorough education and exercises is the key to get his clients feeling independent, motivated and inevitably, achieving their goals.
